Everyday life of individuals is affected by narcissism. Narcissists exhibit certain traits which tend to bring adverse impacts on their daily life, such as:

Because of the negative aspects accompanied by narcissism such as arrogance, exploitative tendencies, and lack of empathy, a narcissistic leader can be bad for society. Narcissists can fool others easily and are highly incompetent because they consider themselves highly efficient. Narcissistic people are susceptible to money problems. As narcissists avoid taking risks, therefore, are prone to addiction problems. Narcissists in workplace environments spread negativity as they consider themselves superior to others. They overestimate their performance as they always expect themselves to do well. Narcissists lack delay of gratification in seductive environments. They lack advice-seeking as they consider themselves right. Narcissists give negative reactions to failure as it is hard for them to accept. They give high reactions to setbacks in their lives and are not able to bear high pressure. Narcissists lack empathy which gives rise to narcissism in society. As narcissists only care about themselves, they bring an enormous impact on society and their surroundings.


We are living in a culture of escalating narcissism. Narcissism on an individual level can affect the culture. Any culture that tends to focus on individuality instead of collectivity, promotes higher levels of narcissism. This is because individualistic cultures focus on personal gains and ignore collective benefits. Collective harmony is in lack in such cultures. Narcissistic cultures tend to possess the following major characteristics:

  • Exaggerated narcissistic admiration
  • Greater narcissistic tendencies
  • Grandiosity
  • Interference in cultural values
  • Social motives are disregarded

Narcissists in workplaces engage in manipulative behaviors and negatively influence others. They undermine the morale and integrity of their sub ordinances and make others feel inferiority complex. They show no appreciation for others and only think of themselves as efficient. They show no courtesy and sympathy to their employees. Because of their higher sense of grandiosity, they pose arrogant attitudes and behaviors, and their reactions are on the top. Narcissists constantly look for praise and admiration from their superiors and peers. They look for recognition for every single achievement. Narcissists fantasize about being in absolute power and love to control their employees. Narcissists are unable to manage criticism at work. Narcissists always want special treatment. All these behaviors at the workplace promote:

  • Lack of teamwork and unity
  • Team conflicts
  • No team collaboration at all

Oversharing on the other hand such as taking selfies and posting them too frequently by youngsters is too much affected by narcissism. The higher the amount of social media content posted, the higher the levels of grandiosity in narcissism. So increased use of social media contributes to a rise in narcissistic traits in people.

On the other hand, narcissists are using social media as a medium to express themselves. They use social media to satisfy their pride and ego. Narcissists like to share things that reflect them as masters. They take pride in showing such things to others. Social media promotes:

  • Higher levels of grandiosity
  • Lot of social media friends
  • Preoccupation with social status

  1. You need to accept your feelings and emotions such as anger, depression, and anxiety. You need recognition of your feelings and try not to suppress them
  2. You need to open yourself to constant criticism to grow.
  3. You need to educate yourself by learning the characteristics of narcissism in a better way.
